  • Seems some locals got into legal trouble for what was once a wide-spread practice at public auctions……

That’s crazy! Surely he knows it is illegal. I remember about 20 years ago in Dallas some foreclosure investors got in trouble for the same thing.

When I went to auction school, I learned that a common practice ( illegal) is to have SHILLS at the auction who will bid it up or control the final bid.

A shill is someone you pay to be at the auction to bid. It’s illegal.

Something similar happened to lady in Panama who was selling her house absolute auction. The aucioneer company (from Alabama) got a couple of their biddies to come to Panama to bid on the property. The Aucion company did very little advertising and no directional signs to the property which was impossible to find if you did not know where it was located. So the auctioneer buddies basically stole the property for way below market. It’s still tied up in a lawsuit.
